Kim Gyu-hwan's story is a true account frequently cited in lectures and corporate training sessions. The only son of a family with no relatives, he became the household breadwinner at fifteen. With no skills whatsoever, he joined Daewoo Heavy Industries as an errand boy, starting by sweeping floors and carrying water.
That same man would go on to earn two national medals, four presidential commendations, an invention patent award, and five Jang Yeong-sil Awards, before being recognized in 1992 as a Master Craftsman in ultra-precision machining. He failed the national technical qualification written exam nine times, the Grade 1 national technical qualification six times, and his Class 2 driver's license five times before switching to Class 1, which he then passed on his fifth attempt. Language learning was no different. Without ever attending a language school, he stuck one new sentence a day on ceilings, walls, the dining table, the bathroom door, and his office desk — and through sheer repetition eventually achieved conversational fluency in five languages.

Opportunity Finds the Prepared — The Bellflower Story
Among all his stories, perhaps the most memorable is the bellflower episode. Every morning, the first to arrive, he would clean the factory — and one day he planted bellflower seeds in a corner of the grounds. There was no particular reason; he simply thought it would be nice.
Months later, an American buyer visiting the factory noticed the flowers in bloom and asked what they were. Kim called them "American star flowers," explaining that the shape of a bellflower blossom resembles the stars on the American flag.
