Unit converter
Convert everyday units for length, mass, volume, and temperature. Switch to "Full" for more categories and rare units. The specific gravity (SG) tab converts volume (㎖, ℓ) to mass (g, ㎏).
—
Mass ≈ volume × SG (approx. water at 20 °C). 1 ㎖ × SG ≈ g, 1 ℓ × SG ≈ ㎏.
Unit conversion and the story of the metric system
This converter handles everyday units—length, mass, volume, temperature, area—and a specific-gravity tab that turns liquid volume into weight. Type a value and the result appears instantly; no account needed.
How to use
- Pick a category, enter a value, and read the converted results.
- The SG tab multiplies mL or L by specific gravity to estimate grams or kilograms—handy in the kitchen or the lab when a scale isn't around.
Where the metric system comes from
The metric system was born in 1790s revolutionary France under the motto "for all times, for all peoples." With every town using different rules and measures, France chose a standard that belonged to no one: the Earth itself. One meter was defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. Seventeen nations signed the Metre Convention in 1875, and since 2019 every unit—including the kilogram—has been defined by unchanging physical constants rather than artifacts in a vault.
Why inches and pounds survive
Only the US, Liberia, and Myanmar never officially adopted metric, though feet in aviation and inches for screens live on by custom. Mixing systems is no joke: in 1999, NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter—a mission worth over $100 million—was lost because one team calculated in metric and another in imperial. There is no better argument for a unit converter.
Specific gravity — the Eureka number
In science and engineering, specific gravity is the ratio of a substance's density to that of a reference substance: pure water at 4 °C (1.0 g/cm³) for solids and liquids, air at 0 °C and 1 atm for gases. Dividing density by density cancels the units, leaving a dimensionless number — the same figure in any measurement system.
The idea dates to the 3rd century BC, when the king of Syracuse asked Archimedes to prove whether his new crown was pure gold. The bathtub moment that made him shout "Eureka!" was precisely this discovery: submerge an object and compare its weight to the water it displaces. A silver-alloyed crown is bulkier than pure gold of the same weight, so it displaced more water — and the goldsmith's fraud was exposed.
The rule of thumb is simple: above 1 sinks, below 1 floats. Iron (7.85) goes down; cooking oil (≈0.91) sits on top of water. Brewers read alcohol content from the SG drop during fermentation, and mechanics judge battery charge by electrolyte SG. The SG tab here works on the same principle: 1 ℓ of water weighs 1 ㎏, so 1 ℓ of ethanol at SG 0.79 weighs about 0.79 ㎏.
Good uses
- Overseas shopping: turn inches, pounds, and ounces into cm, kg, and g.
- Cooking: convert recipe ounces to grams and Fahrenheit oven settings to Celsius.
- Fitness and travel: miles to kilometers, forecast °F to °C.
- Work and labs: estimate solution weight from volume with specific gravity.
Values are computed entirely in your browser and never uploaded. SG conversion approximates water at 20 °C—use measured values for precision work.
